The perfect hand happens when the starter card is a 5 and your hand consists of all three other 5s and nobs — a Jack in the same suit as the starter card. This hand is the unicorn among cribbage players.

When this happens, you have a 29 hand! In brief, it counts like this: Jack-Five 15s for two = 8 points. Five+Five+Five 15s for two = 8 points. Four of a kind (fives) = 12 points. To count a 29 hand in cribbage, you first have to get the cards you need. You'll need 3 fives and a Jack of the different suit from the fives. Then, we need the luck of getting the remaining five cut before the pegging phase. We count 16 points for the fifteens, 12 points for the four of a kind, and 1 point for nibs.

The only hand that will score a 29 consists of all four 5s and the Jack of nobs.
